I've found that holding the needle a little above the fabric, wrapping the thread around twice, then lowering the needle to the fabric and pushing the needle just above where you came up at, makes good knots. Becareful not to pull too tightly or the knot will just go right through the fabric. There are a couple of good tutorial sites on the internet. Use a search engine like Google and just type in French Knots, and browse around. Also, use a piece of scrap fabric and practice, once you get the hang of wrapping the thread and pushing through, it's simple.
Good Luck

Thank you very much
:) I find them tricky too, so I sometimes cheat and use a bead!
Happy Stitching!

I find them dashed (no swearing) impossible too.
Have you noticed, though, that from time to time your thread knots itself when you don't want it to? I try to avoid the F/N wherever possible.

After many years of stitching, I have just discovered how to do these nasty little beasties.....take the thread 3 times round the needle, then push back down just away from where it came up .... don't forget to hold the thread fairly tight or it will come loose....and Voila!! you should have a french knot!

I have never been successful with this. I have cheated by using beads, or tying a knot and going in backwards. I do always seem to be able to make a french knot when I don't need them! When my thread gets twisted and I think I can pull it through just one more time I end up with a knot. I just can't figer out how to do it when I need it! ~Laughs~
